Nine times out of ten, the love of purebred dogs begins with a the love of one single pet. Ask anyone in Ridgebacks how they got involved in the breed and most will tell you it all began with their first pet, purchased with no intention of breeding, showing or being owned by an entire breed. Mahaba began in this exact way. After seeing my first Ridgeback in 1997, I promptly began my search for one. As luck would have it, I purchased my first Ridgeback, a ridgeless Ridgeback, no less, and I was on my way. This puppy stole my heart and soon I fell in love with the breed and have been involved ever since. Since that fateful day in April of 1997, I have been very fortunate to have obtained three more Ridgebacks. RobRoy set the wheels in motion years ago and near his second birthday, I took in a 3 1/2 year-old Kimmie, Tampo's Tamburo Kimmie, on a co-ownership with long-time breeder Jean Lynch of Tampo Kennels. Having Kimmie allowed me to venture in the the world of 'show dogs'. Both of these dogs are still with me today. Kimmie is 12 1/2 and RobRoy is 10 1/2! In the summer of 2000 I was lucky ONCE AGAIN, to have the opportunity to acquire a show bitch, TEVA. A fierce hunter and avid courser, Teva is a wonderful addition to the pack. She is an animated, personality-plus girl who makes heads turn wherever she goes. When opportunity knocks, one must answer, so in March of 2001, one month before Kimmie was due to whelp her litter, along came Birk, CH Simbali's Repo Man, FCh, TT. At the age of three months, Birk blended in with everyone and has been such a joy to have as a show dog and family member. He is an extremely mellow, sweet and loving boy who charms all who walk in the door. At just 18 months, Birk took Reserve Winners Dog at the 2002 RRCUS National Specialty in Lansing, Michigan and quickly finished his AKC conformation championship the following fall. In his limited showing as a special, he defeated top specials and was awarded multiple RRCUS medallions, all owner-handled. He is retired now but not before siring three litters of beautiful puppies, all who have inherited his gentle temperament, exquisite movement and outstanding conformaton. I was lucky to have had the opportunity to take Birk to three outstanding bitches, CH Rokishoals Rumor Has It, CH Rokishoals Obsidian Angel and CH Avalon's Change of Command. The decision to breed Birk to these three lovely girls has has such a positive impact on Mahaba. "Children" and "Grandchildren" have gone on to win top honors at National Specialties and in all venues all across the country, as well as provide wonderful additions to numerous families over the past several years. On April 21, 2001, Kimmie whelped her second and last litter of puppies. This was a breeding that I had waited for since she came home with me in 1999. The two show puppies out of this litter, Asha and Nico are now AKC Champions. Theta lives in North Carolina with a wonderful family and Kaya is in Atlanta, helping to raise her two (human) boys and very spoiled by her family as well. To view updated news on recent litters please go to the home page and click on 'past litters'. All Mahaba puppies are sold as companions first. I consider myself lucky to place puppies in homes where they are treasured members of their families and that is my number one priority in puppy placement.
